Abstract
Everyday products with mature architectures often undergo incremental improvements despite evolving user expectations. While methods such as the Kano model and Quality Function Deployment (QFD) effectively identify and prioritize customer requirements, the transition from requirement analysis to conceptual design frequently remains insufficiently structured, reducing the transparency and traceability of the design process. This study proposes a demand-driven design framework that integrates Kano analysis, QFD, Function–Means decomposition, and morphological exploration into a unified and traceable design methodology. The framework was demonstrated through the redesign of a traditional stovetop moka pot. User requirements were identified through interviews and Kano analysis, translated into engineering characteristics using the House of Quality, transformed into functional structures and alternative solution principles, and subsequently implemented in a functional prototype.
Prototype evaluation indicated reduced overheating and burnt flavour compared with a conventional moka pot. Sensory assessment showed that all eight participating baristas and the consumers involved in the informal evaluation preferred the redesigned prototype to the conventional moka pot.
Beyond the case study, the proposed framework contributes a transparent, reproducible, and traceable methodology for systematic concept generation in user-centred product design.
