One of the most significant challenges students face during project development, particularly in the urban furniture design process, is design fixation. This state occurs when a designer, constrained by prior knowledge and repetitive patterns, fails to produce novel solutions. The present study evaluates the effectiveness of the collage technique as an intermediary tool to disrupt design fixation and enhance the creativity of student designs. In this study, students were divided into an experimental group (using collage) and a control group (without collage). The final designs were evaluated through a blind review by experts based on five creativity indicators: Originality, Flexibility, Elegance, Elaboration, and Usefulness. The results indicated that the experimental group performed significantly better in terms of the total creativity score compared to the control group. Analysis of individual indicators revealed that the use of collage led to a significant increase in originality, flexibility, and elegance. However, no statistically significant differences were observed in the elaboration and usefulness indicators. The research findings suggest that integrating collage into the design process serves as a mediator for formal innovation by breaking design fixation. This provides a practical way to transcend clichés in urban furniture design. Furthermore, the lack of a significant difference in the usefulness indicator demonstrates that the increase in innovation through this method did not compromise functional requirements or design logic.
